Etymology: French, from protéger, to protect
Definition: One whose career is advanced by a person of experience
Protégé Partners is a specialized asset management and advisory firm that was founded in 2002 to focus exclusively on investing in established smaller hedge funds and select emerging managers. Through tenured judgment, deep-dive due diligence and pro-active risk management, we strive to identify best-in-class managers and put capital to work through arms-length, seed and tactical investments. At the foundation of our efforts is a strong and well tenured investment team that embodies the investment philosophy and process of our founder,
Since our inception, our commingled flagship portfolio has reflected the culmination of our core competencies. Additional dedicated offerings include a market independent strategy and select co-investment opportunities with our seed/acceleration managers through syndication share classes.
Our commingled flagship funds, the Protégé Partners Funds, invest in select established and emerging managers across the range of our strategic core competencies. Allocations may be made in arms-length investments, as well as seed/acceleration investments that may carry additional negotiated rights such as profit participation, guaranteed payments, discounted fees and improved transparency.
The MOV37 strategy seeks to generate alpha through a portfolio of independent strategies executed by data science investment professionals utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence to identify investment opportunities based on analyses of structured and unstructured data sourced from “the four quadrants” of data. Due to a confluence of factors, including recent technological advancements in processing power and data storage, we believe the MOV37 independent strategies can be executed efficiently and effectively by smaller teams than traditional quantitative firms. This nascent opportunity set serves as a natural extension/progression of Protégé’s core competencies in sourcing, underwriting and investing with small and emerging managers.
The Market Independent strategy seeks to generate returns that are uncorrelated to global equity markets by capturing alpha in small, idiosyncratic, and capacity constrained strategies. These strategies, in turn, seek to compound capital by harvesting risk premia in various broad and diversified asset classes and products – some traditional and others not – examples of which include weather, liquidity, insurance, regulation and market structure. Moreover, the strategy aims to take advantage of the Protégé Group of Companies’ expertise gained from focusing on evaluating smaller and emerging managers to identify nascent strategies before alpha decay occurs.
For almost two decades, Protégé Partners has been recognized as an industry-leader in smaller and emerging hedge fund investing, including seeding and acceleration investments.
As peer-to-peer collaboration amongst institutional investors accelerates, Protégé is well positioned to utilize our sourcing, structuring, and negotiating skills to organize investment “syndicates” among institutions with similar hedge fund interests, leveraging the group’s aggregate buying power to secure favorable fees and other investment terms from hedge fund managers.
Beginning with a select group from the Class of 2016 Protégé - seeded or accelerated funds, Protégé will launch Syndication Share Classes (with terms already negotiated by Protégé experts) through the Syndicator “Deal Room” within ASPN Solutions. Negotiated terms can often include fee discounts, seed cash flows, lock ups, MFNs, reporting and redemption provisions.
The ASPN Solutions technology is a workflow and collaboration platform designed to help institutional investors discover best-in-class smaller and emerging managers with syndicate terms or potential while safeguarding the privacy of participants.
The ASPN Syndicator “Deal Room,” available only to qualified participants, provides a forum for the due diligence process as well as critical documentation management. Syndication experts from Protégé Partners are available to facilitate the due diligence process and leverage the buying power of interested participants.
